The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I can’t remember the last time I stayed up until 2AM reading a book but this one clinched it. I wont rehash the far more complete review and synopsis out there. But, know that if you love William Gibson or Frank Herbert and the singular, innovative worlds that they created then this is a book for you. If you believe that sci-fi is fundamentally about ideas and about talking about relevant issues in a context that is out of history then this is a book for you. If you are weary of rehashed sci-fi and fantasy tropes and the standard trove of characters (although genres do have some inescapable conventions) then this is a book for you. Great summer reading; The Windup Girl made me remember why I loved sci-fi and the power it has to make you the think about world differently.
